Why Your Garden Can Suddenly Stop Producing After Years Of Success

Potting mix has no real soil biology in it to begin with. It starts sterile by design, heated during composting to kill weed seeds and pathogens, which also kills the beneficial biology along with it.
Why it feels sudden even though it isn't
Microbial life in a pot needs an ongoing food source to survive. Once the organic matter in fresh potting mix breaks down and any nutrients are used up, there's nothing left to sustain the population, and it declines through starvation rather than disappearing all at once.
At the same time, the organic materials in the mix, bark, coir, peat, physically break down and compact through repeated wetting and drying. That reduces the oxygen and structure most beneficial organisms need to survive.
And unlike a garden bed, a pot has no way to replenish what's lost. No surrounding soil to migrate in from, no rainfall carrying in fresh organisms, no worms moving through connecting layers. Whatever biology existed at the start is essentially all there ever was.
Plants can keep performing reasonably well while some biology remains active, right up until the population and the structure both collapse together. One season you're harvesting normally. The next, the system has simply run out.
It's not that last year's success was a fluke and this year is the real result. It's that the mix was already running down, and this year it finally ran out of what it needed to keep functioning.
What this means if it's happening to you
If your pots have quietly gotten worse year on year, or a garden that used to reliably produce suddenly doesn't, this is almost always the reason. Dead potting mix doesn't announce itself. It just slowly depletes until one day there's nothing left to draw on.
Left alone, next season will very likely look the same as this one. The biology doesn't refill itself. It needs to be put back deliberately.
The fix
Put the biology back, but biology alone isn't enough if there's nothing to sustain it. Along with the microbial inoculants, you need a food source that helps the population establish and persist rather than declining again straight away. Think of the biology as the workforce and mulch or compost as their lunch. Bring in the workforce without feeding them and they don't last. Feed them consistently and the population builds and holds.
How long does it take to fix depleted potting mix?
Most people notice their mix holding moisture differently within about two weeks of reintroducing biology. Visible plant response, healthier leaf colour, stronger growth, usually follows within three to four weeks. By around eight weeks most containers are functioning like living soil again rather than an inert growing medium.
What changes once the biology is back
Your pots start producing the way they did in the good years. Cucumbers, capsicums, tomatoes, whatever you're growing, doing what they used to do.
And there's a quieter shift too. The relief of knowing you never lost your touch. Nothing about your skill changed. The soil just needed refilling, and now you know that going into every season from here.
