I work in soil biology. I see what functioning soil looks like under a microscope and I see what switched off soil looks like too.

And I see it everywhere. Backyards. Raised beds. Street verges. Pots on balconies.

Most of it is switched off.

Not because people are doing it wrong. Just because the biology has quietly faded out and nobody told them that was the problem.

Here's what most people don't realise. Soil isn't just where plants grow. It's the foundation of everything above it.

 

When soil biology is functioning, water moves through the landscape differently. Insects have food and habitat.

Birds follow the insects. The whole system above ground responds to what's happening below it.

A backyard veggie bed sounds small. But multiply that across every garden in every suburb and suddenly it's not small at all.
